چکیده

NICMOS images of the nearby late-type L dwarf 2MASS J22521073 1730134 (DENIS-P J225210.73 173013.4) show that it is a close double, separation 0B13. The companion is 1.0 mag fainter than the primary in the F110W passband and 1.55 mag fainter in the F170M images. The latter passband is centered on the 1.6 mmethane band. The small separation and the absence of an optical counterpart suggest that the two sources are associated; the relatively blue infrared color suggests that 2MASS J22521073 1730134B is a T-type binary companion of the late-L primary. This hypothesis is supported by infrared spectroscopy, which shows weak methane absorption in both theH and K passbands. We estimate a distance of 13:6þ3:8 2:6 pc to the system and a projected linear separation of 1.75 AU. We consider the potential for measuring dynamical masses of the two components. L-dwarf Binaries in the 20-parsec Sample∗

We have used the NICMOS NIC1 camera on the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain high-resolution near-infrared images of 27 nearby ultracool dwarfs with formal distance estimates less than 20 parsecs. One target, 2MASS J22551861-5713056, is resolved as a binary system, with a 4:1 flux ratio in the F110W passband. The primary has spectral type L6, and the revised spectroscopic parallax places it at a...

Discovery of 11 New T Dwarfs in the Two Micron All Sky Survey, including a Possible L/t Transition Binary

We present the discovery of 11 new T dwarfs, found during the course of a photometric survey for mid-to-late T dwarfs in the 2MASS Point Source Catalog and from a proper motion selected sample of ultracool dwarfs in the 2MASS Working Database. Using the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility SpeX spectrograph, we obtained low-resolution (R∼150) spectroscopy, allowing us to derive near-infrared spectr...

Binarity in Brown Dwarfs: T Dwarf Binaries Discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary

We present the discovery of two T dwarf binaries, 2MASS 1225 2739AB and 2MASS 1534 2952AB, identified in a sample of 10 T dwarfs imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. Companionship is established by the uniquely red F814W F1042M colors of the binary components, caused by heavily pressure-broadened K i absorption centered at 7665 and 7699 Å. The separations ...

Resolved Spectroscopy of M Dwarf/l Dwarf Binaries. Ii. 2mass J17072343 0558249ab

We present Infrared Telescope Facility SpeX observations of the M/L binary system 2MASS J17072343 0558249. SpeX imaging resolves the system into a 1B01 0B17 visual binary in which both components have red near-infrared colors. Resolved low-resolution (R 150) 0.8Y2.5 m spectroscopy reveals strong H2O, CO, and FeH bands and alkali lines in the spectra of both components, characteristic of late-ty...

Two nearby M dwarf binaries from 2 MASS

We report the discovery of two binary M dwarf systems in the immediate solar neighborhood using 2MASS. The first is an M6.5 companion to the nearby G star HD 86728 (Gl 376). The known properties of HD 86728 indicate that the M dwarf (Gl 376B) is old, metal-rich and only 14.9 parsecs away. The M dwarf is highly active with both Hα and X-ray emission. Thus, Gl 376B offers the opportunity to study...
